Gibraltar, asal katanya berasal dari bahasa Arab yang berarti Jabal Thariq yang artinya bukit Thariq, ini merupakan tempat mendarat Thariq bin Ziyad bersama pasukannya pada saat menginjakkan kaki di Eropa pada tahun 711 M untuk pertama kalinya. Sampai sekarang Selat Laut Tengah yang menghubungkan antara Afrika dan Eropa di wilayah Spanyol masih bernama Selat Giblartar.
